Message from the Athletic Director

George Read Middle School Sports for the 2025-26 School Year

George Read Middle School Sports Program Mission Statement

At George Read Middle School, our sports programs focus on building a positive team culture where character, effort, and growth matter much more than winning.

We believe being part of a team is a privilege earned through commitment, respect, and hard work—on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.

Rooted in our school's core values—growth, responsibility, leadership, equity, advocacy, diversity, empathy, and resiliency—our program strives to help students become confident athletes and better people. We welcome all students to try, grow, and lead as part of something bigger than themselves.

All students must have a valid DIAA physical dated 4/1/25 or later to participate in any sport at George Read.

In order to be considered for a position on any sports team, each student must have the Colonial School District Sports Permission Form and the DIAA Physical Form (dated after 4/1/25) on file with the Athletic Director, Mr. Sawdey.  All pages must be signed & dated where indicated. The DIAA forms may be found by using the link on this page, or they may be obtained in the Main Office at school.
* The DIAA physical is valid for one year from the time of the physical examination.

The LifeHealth Center in Wilmington provided physical examinations at GR on Wednesday, September 3. For an appointment with LifeHealth at any time, call (302) 552-3574. Additional Permission Forms for the physical may be printed from this site or obtained from Mr. Sawdey (Room C10), Mr. Shaw (Room C12), or from the Main or Central ofiices.

Students may have their Family Doctor, Walgreens, Urgent Care Facilities, or other provider perform the physical, but they must be documented on the DIAA Physical Form.

*Parents/Guardians and students must also complete and return the Individual Participation Form for each sport to be played during the school year. These will be handed out by each coach during that Sport's Interest meeting.

As always, students must maintain a MINIMUM 1.75 GPA in order to be eligible to play a sport at George Read Middle School.
